Made with love.

During the last few weeks of term, we heard some exciting news. Isobella and her family had bought a new house! Isobella was very keen to create a plan to show her parents, which outlined her 'expectations' for her new home. She had plenty of great ideas!

Isobella's story soon became a provocation for another group of girls. These girls could often be found drawing and designing houses, or creating houses with our blocks and other resources.

We thought it would be meaningful to bring these girls together, and invite them to be a part of a collaborative project, looking closely at the processes of designing and constructing houses.

Isobella, Emma, Joyce, Lutie and Anika joined together to create their very own dream home, built specifically for them (five girls) and with only two weeks of the term left, there was no time to lose!

The girls began by discussing their hopes and dreams for the house and following on from this, after exploring different house plans, they began construction. The next step was the hardest, moving from 2D to 3D and transforming their plans into an upstanding cardboard house. The problem solving and engineering skills demonstrated by the girls were fantastic, and there was lots of wonderful collaboration. Everyone had a part to play and it was beautiful to see the way in which the girls drew on the expertise of one another.

Anika was the flower designing expert and she also constructed the walls of the house. Lutie was the expert bunk bed maker, Emma created the kitchen appliances and furniture, Joyce made the pictures to hang on the walls, as well as the pet dog and Isobella designed an impressive fish tank, as well as a tree swing.

To listen to the girls share their story and describe what was in the house to the rest of the class, was a real joy. There was so much deep thinking that went into this project, and it seemed that the girls were really satisfied with what they had achieved.

It wasn't long before this project had captured the minds of several of the other girls in the class, and so we look forward to adding a new chapter to this story next term, with a new group of girls.

Here are some photos of the house that Anika, Lutie, Emma, Isobella and Joyce built:
