Our ongoing conversations about the weather took an
interesting turn today when we began talking about rainbows. As with the
videos and photos of lightening strikes that we saw online, the rainbow pictures we
watched, captured the girls' interest.
This is some of the conversation that we shared together.
Kate: I saw a double rainbow when I was with my mum in the
car.
I thought there were gaps in the rainbow but there was
actually clouds over it.
Eloise: The second rainbow is the rainbow’s shadow.
Joyce: People’s shadows are black and maybe rainbow shadows
are black too.
(This is an interesting point for us to follow up)
Joyce: Rainbows are amazing, I was surprised when I saw it,
and it is the
most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
Kate: When it rains the rainbow goes away. It goes up to the
sky
Zoe: … into the clouds.
Eloise: When the wind comes it blows the rainbow to another
place; a place
where the rain has stopped already.
Luca: When there’s no sun, the rainbow hides in the cloud.
When
the rain ends, the rainbow comes again.
Joyce: Rainbows only come out if there’s sun.
Kate: Rainbows can’t come in the rain because the lightening
might hit the rainbow. (Interesting that Kate’s interest in lightening has come
up here).
Eloise: If there are too many clouds the rainbow can’t grow
over the clouds.
Luca: Rainbows are supposed go over clouds.
Keira: They do go over the clouds. They really do!
Joyce: Unicorns can live at the end of the rainbow and they
can float on rainbows but when people stand on rainbows they sink down.
Rainbows are soft – you have to have magic.
The unicorn’s horns are magic.
Eloise: Rainbows are soft.
There’s a pot of gold there. You have to follow it to the
end of the rainbow.
Joyce: You might meet a unicorn.
Eloise: You might find treasure.
Eloise: I think we are both right.
We are drawing our ideas about rainbows so watch out for those!
Interesting topic. Luca & I just googled "why rainbows are circular". We also found out that the moon can cause a rainbow!
