With an abundance of apples we thought we would make some apple pies. Lutie, Isobella, Sophie and Emma were keen to help and we got underway by cutting up the apples. This was an interesting exercise and it turned into a lovely 'chat' session (surprise, surprise!).
A couple of the girls found the apple cutting quite tricky - they seemed a little nervous about using too much pressure on the knives. I reassured them that the knives were very blunt and quite safe and that they could use more pressure to cut the apples into pieces.
We talked about portions and had some maths conversations around halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths. We counted by twos and put the apples into groups according to how many pies we would need for all the girls in the class... and Mrs Smith and Mrs Bayes of course.
Several of the other girls joined in filling in the pastry cases before the pies headed off to the oven.
At the end of the day, and before they got to have one, we shared the steps of the apple making process with the other girls. The girls recall was spot on!
Isobella offered the idea that the girls would be Master Chefs when they grew up.
The apple pie was delicious! Elliot and I ate the leftovers from Emma. Keep baking and I'm sure you can all join Junior Master Chef one day!
