We like to think of Mt St John as our extended classroom, as each visit to the mountain provides the girls with new possibilities for learning and exploration. There are always new discoveries to be made, new heights to be reached in the trees and new insects, plants and birds to investigate.
The natural world provides the girls with countless resources, and the open-ended nature of these resources provokes the girls to think creatively as well as to escape into their imagination when engaging with them. Nothing on the mountain carries a prescribed use, therefore inviting and encouraging the girls to think outside of the box.
Here are some pictures from our time on Mt St John this morning:
(You might like to talk with your daughter about what is happening in the photographs. I'm sure the girls will have some great stories for you!)
Can you see the photo of Luca and Kate? Luca went into the 'forest' of growth to help Kate find her way in the maze of weeds. Kate became overcome by the dew on the tall weeds - they were much taller than her. She needed a friend. Luca quietly and confidently came to her aid as she had already made a track through.
ReplyDeleteThen there were the sticks... the girls interest in sticks has been growing each week. Eloise and Anika seem to be the catalysts with the other girls joining in collecting more and more as we progress on our walk. The play that begins on the mountain with the sticks, has been brought into our garden at school. The sticks seem to be supporting friendships that are being made between the girls. It's so wonderful to watch.
Time to join us one Thursday soon?
