It Was the Best Day!

Today we had the most wonderful day. Although there was a storm raging outside the classroom, we were warm and cosy spending our last morning of the term together.

It started with finishing off the Easter Eggs that the girls had painted yesterday.

Then we all went to visit the Year One girls who were settling into their new classroom.

After lunch the girls enjoyed an Easter Egg hunt before we began our farewell ceremony.

First to be farewelled was Mrs Chang. She has finished the requirements for her
teaching training, and will soon be a fully qualified Early Childhood teacher.
The girls had lovingly made her a card and then had told her all about it but they also
told her that she had to keep it a secret!!! Don't you just love it!

We presented her with flowers and a gift to thank her for all the kindness
and love she has shown us all over the time she has been with us.

We will miss you Iris.

Then it was time to say goodbye to our girls who will be in Year One next term.

It is wonderful to know that you will be just next door.

Imogéne chose a perfect song to sing...

'Be kind to each other and never hurt another
and the world will be a HAPPY, HAPPY place'

Dear Scarlett, Isabella, Imogéne, Zara, Lily and Mika,
you will always be a part of the Foundation Class.
We have loved being part of your families, both close and far away.

Much love

Mrs Bayes

The Foundation Class Swimming Carnival

After attending the Year One Swimming Carnival last week.
The girls said they would like to have their own
swimming carnival day.
We thought this was a great idea so this afternoon the girls took part in 4 races.

Race One: Running the length of the pool.

Race Two: Blowing the ping pong ball.

Race Three: Horse Racing with the noodles.

Race Four: The flutter board.

The girls lined up behind cones and listened for their name to be called before entering the pool.

We invited Madame Alpe to be the adjudicator as she played this
part in the Year One Swimming Carnival last week.
After all we needed our carnival to be just like Year Ones!

Running the length of the pool!

We blew ping pong balls along the surface of the water.
This helps us to learn how to breath underwater.

Horse racing!

'Flutter Boards'

What an amazing afternoon in the pool.
The girls really tried their best and had lots of fun!
I think this might be the start of a new tradition in The Foundation Class.

Pysanky

Today we visited Mr Lewis who looks after the achives for the school. His hobby is making Pysanky. These eggs originated from the Ukraine and each design has a story. The eggs are about fertility, new beginnings and often have spring themes to them.

The girls learnt that they are made by layers of wax being applied (a little like batik), and then the wax is warmed and removed.

We have told the girls that we expect the eggs they are painting will be just like Mr Lewis'!

Grandparents Day

The rain wasn't enough to spoil the wonderful time we had with our grandparents and special friends
who came to visit us on Friday. The girls shared lunch with their grandparents before exploring the classroom, going to chapel and having a tour around the school.

It was a lovely afternoon and the girls enjoyed making and giving their special visitors
a lovingly made 'I love you' card.

Many thanks to you all for coming to school and sharing your time with us.

Conversations About the Big Questions!

Tess had asked her mum some questions that Martha shared with us. We thought they were very interesting and had a discussion with the girls about them;

"If I die what will I become and if Tommy dies what will he become? Will I be a boy?"

You will still be a girl if you die - Lily
You will be an old grandma - Mika
My mum told me that only old people die - Zara
My grandpa died of Asthma. His hair turned white first - Lily
My grandma doesn't have white hair - Imogene
When they die they will go under the ground and then a rock sign goes down on the ground.
If they are almost dead they are going to go underground. Police dig the hole and people put them in there. Someone else puts the stone there - Mika

We talked about people's spirits and their bodies...

A spirit is kind of like God I think - Isabella
If we die, we go to hospital - Jacqui
A long time ago, My grandpa and Oma became a bird when they died. First they were in the ground
inside a box and then they turned into a bird (is she thinking of the person's spirit?) - Féline
Magic fairies help to turn people into birds - Jacqui
My aunties dog died, we put him into the box and put rocks over it - Isabella

We reintroduced the idea of what happens with bodies and spirits...

The body stays under the ground and the spirit goes up to heaven - Lily
When people die, they disappear ... they disappear to God - Scarlett
My three fish died and they all went to fish heaven - Mika
When people die, they change into purple and the box becomes
smaller and the whole body goes up to God - Jacqui
I think that's right 'cause before Cicadas die they turn purple - Mika

What a lot of interesting theories these girls have already developed about death and dying and they seem to have an understanding about bodies and spirits.

Belated Happy Birthday to Mariana!

We forgot to post photos of Mariana's birthday!
We had the most delicious cake and sang Happy Birthday.

Happy 4th Birthday Féline!

This afternoon Féline's family brought in some cupcakes to share.
Féline sat very proudly on the birthday chair while everyone sang
'Happy Birthday'. When she had finished blowing out the candles the
girls waited patiently while Féline handed out the cupcakes.

Thank you Féline for sharing this special day with us.
